About Me

Hi! My name is Laurie and I love old things and sparkly things! I like to bead and string pearls. I also like to find fabulous old furniture, clean it up and sell it. I’m addicted to tags and the colors blue and lavender. Oh yes. I love to make soap and have a recipe for the most luscious lime sugar scrub EVER made. (Thanks Melissa for sharing this divine recipe!)

It wasn’t until I lost my home and all my possessions in a huge wildfire (the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, 2003), that I realized how important having beauty around me was. In the painful starkness which followed that experience, I discovered a passion for creating beauty I never knew I had. So out of the ashes came this really good thing that has enriched my life immensely!

Funny how discovering things about yourself make you appreciate friends and family even more. As my Aunt Susie says, “The older you get, the more important friends and family are.” She is the woman in my life from whom I learned how to make things beautiful. As a child, I can remember going to her beautifully decorated home. It was filled with wonderful smells (fragrant candles, cookies from the bakery, wonderfully cooked meals…). She could casually throw an afghan over the corner of a sofa and it was art!!!! Even the sound of her voice was lovely, peaceful and soothing. It still is…Thank you, Aunt Susie.

My favorite blue cabinet..

I may have just the tiniest addiction to ribbon....

my favorite gray organizer....

Because I have a “real” job where I don’t get to use the right side of my brain very much, I find discovering beautiful things and adding to their beauty very fulfilling. You’ll find all of my goods (bath products, vintage furniture and handcrafted items) at Ivy Gate Cottage in Descanso, California.

  1. You sound like a pretty amazing woman. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to find out that quite a few young people have learned how to make beautiful things from you, just like your Aunt Susie taught you. Everything you ascribed to her and her home could easily be said about you and yours, wonderful stuff and very inspirational.
